You have likely heard of the Smartphone apps called Uber and Lyft. They connect people who need rides with drivers ready to provide them. Founded in 2009, Uber is the best known of the “transportation network companies” (TNC). These companies have become very popular with riders and drivers.
What you may not know is that driving for a TNC may affect your personal auto insurance coverage. Most auto insurance policies cover traditional forms of ride sharing, such as car pools. However, they do not provide coverage when the driver transports people or property for a fee. Those who drive for TNC’s are doing so for income. Therefore, while you are driving for Uber or another TNC, your auto insurance probably does not apply.
The major TNC’s provide some insurance coverage for their drivers. However, this coverage may leave you unprotected at points during a driving assignment. Fortunately, some insurers can fill in the gaps between your own coverage and the TNC’s. If you drive for a TNC or if you are thinking about doing so, please contact our office so that we may review your options with you.
