Often times, drivers worry about leaving their insurance company for something better because of possible repercussions on their ability to get another policy. The good news is that, so long as you take the correct steps when switching, moving from one company to another can actually benefit you.
Car insurance premiums go up over time, sometimes for reasons that are out of your control, such as changes within the insurance company, changes in your area, etc. This is why it’s sometimes in your best interest financially to switch auto insurance companies.
You should consider switching car insurance companies if:
You are Paying Too Much
If you already have as many discounts as you qualify for and your insurance agent has done what they can to save you money, yet you’re still paying much more for car insurance than someone else is offering for drivers with the same record and credit, it may be time to move. Before switching, be sure to ask your car insurance agent about possible discounts and other ways to save money. Agents want to keep you as a client, so they should do everything they can to lower your premiums. Sometimes that’s not enough, however, and you need to move.
It's recommended that you compare car insurance prices every six months or so to make sure you’re not paying too much.
You are Moving
An insurance provider that offers the lowest rates in your state may not be the cheapest option in the state you’re moving to. If you insure with a local provider, they may not offer insurance where you’re going. It’s important to communicate with your agent whenever things are changing so that you can get the coverage you need. Some agents may be able to recommend you to another agent at the same agency in the state you’re moving to, if you don’t want to switch providers.
You Want Better Service
Sometimes, changes aren’t financial but a point of personality. If you’ve switched agents more than once at an agency and don’t like the service you’re getting, you have every right to look for another company that will provide affordable prices and good customer service.
There are few downsides from moving agencies, unless the moves are caused by cancelled policies. If you choose to move for your own reasons and do so appropriately, you can save money and be content with switching when you need to.
